Mary was born on September 6, 1988 in Portland, Oregon. The family was living there while Rick finished his residency. Philip was 9, Hillary was 7, and Melanie was 3.
Pam's pregnancy with Mary was the very hardest for her. In the beginning, she was so sick, she lost 20 pounds and ended up being hospitalized for a few days so she could be rehydrated. She could not do much during the rest of the pregnancy but lay in bed. Philip and Hillary were in school, and Melanie learned how to work the VCR on her own to keep herself busy.
Pam went into labor in the grocery store where her water broke. Once she got to the hospital, she demanded an epidural as soon as possible because of her traumatic birth with Melanie. She was given the epidural at 3 centimeters and by the time they finished, she was complete and ready to push. The labor was basically smooth and her recovery was much easier than her previous pregnancies.
The older kids loved Mary right away. They were always holding and playing with her. At night, Mary would get a little fussy, so Pam would walk up and down the steps in the family room to try and calm her down. When Mary wouldn't sleep at all, Pam would turn the lights on and work on thank yous while she waited for Mary to relax enough to sleep. At one point, Rick had to leave for 3 weeks and Pam ended up staying in her room with Mary the entire time while the other kids kept themselves entertained.

Oh those were the days! I remember when Pam found out she was expecting Mary, and when she was born what a delight she was for everyone. And still is!
They truly are a blessing
